Experience and Education
Vallen graduated from Lake Superior State University in 2013, where she shifted from nursing, to teaching and then into history. Although she no longer pursues or studies history, she is a huge fan of Egyptian culture. She spent her teen and young adult years as a caregiver/babysitter/nanny.
After graduating from university, she became pregnant and got married to her college sweetheart and they started their journey as a military family and moved from MI to IL to VA to WA and back to IL.
During her postpartum period with her second daughter, she developed Postpartum Depression and Postpartum Rage— both of which she had no idea was a possibility. After an intense year of therapy, moves, giving birth, and the many transitions in between, she studied with DONA as a Postpartum Doula in Feb/March of 2019, when she was pregnant with her 3rd daughter, Evelyn.
To their surprise and devastation, Evelyn was stillborn on July 20th, 2019, at 40 weeks and 5 days, while her husband, Jon, was on a 7-month Deployment with the Navy. Luckily, she had her Doula, Kendra, by her side. Supporting her through all of it. Every appointment, every decision, every trip to the funeral home.
Fast Forward to 5 years later, Vallen has used her daughters’ memory to create her company, Evelyn James and Company. Her company trains Doulas and Perinatal Professionals on how to support families after pregnancy and infant loss.
Along with Evelyn James and Company, Vallen owns and operates, Flourishing Family Doulas ( previously Vallentime Postpartum Doula Services). Postpartum Doula Care is her favorite line of work and so she started after her 5th and final baby was heading towards the last months of breastfeeding. She is so excited to serve each and every one of her families.
